Travel Health
For those of you wishing to travel abroad, we are able to provide advice on vaccinations and health recommendations. Simply make a 30 minute appointment with the nurse as soon as you know your date and destination preferably 8-6 weeks before you travel.
Just returned from abroad and feeling unwell?
For those of you who have returned from abroad and think you may have contracted an illness whilst away, it would be appropriate to make an appointment with one of the doctors.
Remember
- Travel in the UK: You may be seen by a local GP by registering as a temporary resident.
- Travel in EEC countries: You need a form E111 from the post office, which will entitle you to varying aspects of medical care depending on the country.
- Travel in non-EEC countries: Some have reciprocal health arrangements with the UK; others require health insurance – if you are in any doubt, take out insurance!
- Travelling in third world countries: Particularly if off the beaten track, requires special health planning. You may need to take a selection of drugs or equipment with you.
- Unaccustomed exposure to the sun’s rays is harmful especially if the sun is hotter than we are used to in York (eg, in the Mediterranean area). Remember always to use appropriate sun blocker and to obey the instructions regarding gradually increased exposure to the sun’s rays. It is wise to wear a hat to protect the crown of the head, and to ensure that you have an adequate water intake.

Non-urgent advice: Notice
It is important to make an initial appointment as early as possible – at least 6 weeks before you travel – as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations.
These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine.
Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.
Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.
