Dentists

To receive routine dental treatment, you must register with a dentist. The University does not provide a dentist for students. However, you can find your nearest through NHS Choices. It is worth bearing in mind that there are only a limited number of NHS Dentists available in York, and they often have long waiting lists.

You have to pay for all dental services. NHS dentists tend to be cheaper than private dentists. Treatment for NHS dentists is graded in three bands. Private dentistry is priced in terms of exactly what treatment you receive.

NHS Price Bands

  • Band 1: £17.50 includes examination, diagnosis and advice. If necessary, it also includes x-rays, a scale and polish and planning for further treatment.
  • Band 2: £48 includes all treatment covered by band 1, plus additional treatment such as fillings, root canal treatment and removing teeth.
  • Band 3: £209 includes all treatment covered by bands 1&2, plus more complex procedures such as crowns, dentures and bridges.

There are some exemptions to paying for dental treatment.

See here if you are entitled to free dental care.

Emergency Dental Care

If you think you need urgent treatment, contact your usual dental practice and ask to be seen as an emergency. If you do not have a regular dentist, you can still get urgent care. Emergency Dental care please telephone 01904725422. This clinic is at 31-33 Monkgate York and operates on appointment only.

Most urgent treatments can be dealt with in one appointment. However, if more than one visit is required, and you return to the same dentist to complete the urgent course of treatment, you will only need to pay a single Band 1 (£17.50) charge for the whole course.
